Paul Azinger gets more time for Captains Picks
Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger will name his four alternates for the American team on September 2, the USPGA announced on Monday.
The naming of the wild cards will come just two weeks before the United States squares off against Europe at the Valhalla Golf Club course.
Previous US teams have had only two captain's picks and they have been known more than a month ahead of the match. But Azinger asked for more wild cards and more time to decide which players to use.
Azinger's selections will come two days after Nick Faldo completes the European lineup with two wild cards and 17 days before the match gets under way in Louisville.
Two years ago, former US captain Tom Lehman pick his alternates three weeks earlier than Azinger will.
The race for the eight automatic American spots will conclude at the PGA Championship in Detroit, Michigan from August 7-10.
The last qualifying event for Europe is the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles from August 28-31.
