Colin Montgomerie closes in on 500th European Tour appearance

Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie is poised to make his 500th European Tour appearance as a professional at next week’s Andalucia Open.

The most prolific British winner on the tour will attempt to land his 32nd title in Seville from March 26-29.

“Over the years and the 499 professional events I have played in I have been delighted and proud to be part of the tour and to see it develop into the thriving worldwide tour it stands as today,” Montgomerie said in a news release on Wednesday.

“I am lucky my career is also my passion and I still enjoy the thrill of competing just as much as I did when I started out 23 years ago.”

The 45-year-old Scot, who will lead Europe at the 2010 Ryder Cup in Wales, landed his first tour title with an emphatic 11-shot win at the 1989 Portuguese Open.

Since then Montgomerie has won the order of merit a record eight times and amassed tour earnings of 23.6 million euros ($30.78 million).

He will be the 18th player to chalk up 500 tour appearances. Fellow Scot Sam Torrance is top of the list with 704.
