Colin Montgomerie more relaxed in new role

The Ryder Cup captaincy is helping Colin Montgomerie relax on the golf course and he believes the new role will ensure his playing performances improve.

“I have been looking for ways to relax on a course for many years and I think I have found it by no fault of my own,” the eight times European number one told Sky Sports News.

“To become Ryder Cup captain has given me a huge responsibility, a sense of responsibility that has given me a feeling of relaxation on the course. I am now enjoying my golf.

“In the long run, both the lead-up and past the 2010 Ryder Cup, it will actually help my golf. I will be more relaxed and therefore play to a higher standard,” added the world number 137.

Montgomerie, 45, who was appointed skipper in January, has allowed himself to be distracted on the course in the past and has occasionally flared up.

Nonetheless, Montgomerie has become the most prolific British winner on the European Tour. This week he bids for his 32nd title when he makes his 500th appearance as a professional at the Andalucia Open in Seville.

“It usually takes about four years to get 100 (appearances) so it means I have been on the tour for 20 years, playing 25 tournaments a year,” he said.

“It means I have been healthy, which is fortunate, and while it might not have appeared so on television, I have enjoyed every minute of it.

“I love the competition more than I do the game of golf. I love the one-on-one nature, especially in a matchplay sense but also in a strokeplay sense, when you are coming down the last few holes trying to win a game, or win a tournament.”

Montgomerie will become the 18th player to chalk up 500 tour appearances. Fellow Scot Sam Torrance is top of the list with 704.
