The Open to return to Muirfield in 2013
The Open will return to Muirfield on Scotland’s east coast in 2013, organisers the Royal & Ancient (R&A) said on Monday.
It will be the 16th time the par-71 links course has hosted golf’s oldest major championship.
“We are delighted that the Open is returning to Muirfield, an outstanding championship course that consistently produces a very worthy champion,” David Hill, the R&A’s director of championships, said in a statement.
Jack Nicklaus won the first of his three Open titles there in 1966. Other former champions at Muirfield include Britain’s Nick Faldo, in 1987 and 1992, and Americans Walter Hagen, Lee Trevino and Tom Watson.
Muirfield last staged the Open in 2002 when South African Ernie Els won the title in a four-way playoff with Australians Steve Elkington and Stuart Appleby and Frenchman Thomas Levet.
