Jose Maria Olazabal in line to be Ryder Cup vice captain

Jose Maria Olazabal has agreed to be a 2010 Ryder Cup vice-captain if he fails to play his way into the team, skipper Colin Montgomerie said on Monday.

“He has said to me he will want to try and play in that team,” Montgomerie told Sky Sports News. “If not, he has accepted … he will be part of the backroom staff.

“He would be my number one choice (as vice-captain). Ollie is the one guy I have always wanted, believe it or not ever since we first met back in the 1984 British Amateur final.”

Twice U.S. Masters champion Olazabal has his work cut out to play his way into the Ryder Cup side. He is way down at 570th place in the world rankings after being dogged by rheumatism since 2007.

Montgomerie, who missed out on the 2008 defeat by the United States at Valhalla, Kentucky, said he had heard favourable reports about the Spaniard’s performance there as Nick Faldo’s vice-captain.

“He was very good with Nick Faldo,” said the 45-year-old Briton. “I wasn’t there but apparently he was exceptionable which I would anticipate anyway.”

Faldo only used one vice-captain at Valhalla but Montgomerie hinted he would go for a more conventional approach and employ several deputies.

“I have been thinking about other (vice-captains) as well,” said the Scot. “I think in every sense every good captain has good backroom staff behind him and that is what I have to have.

“We need everyone together. This is a campaign to regain the Ryder Cup and it starts here.”
