Campbell wins after final day washout

New Zealand's Michael Campbell won the German Masters, his third European Tour title of the season, without playing on Sunday when rain washed out the final round.

With the Gut Larchenhof course unplayable, organisers cut the tournament to 54 holes, leaving Campbell a stroke clear of Jose Coceres of Argentina on 19-under-par 197 after Saturday's third round.

Britain's Colin Montgomerie and Irishman Padraig Harrington shared third place, four strokes behind Campbell, while Tour rankings leader Lee Westwood trailed home seven strokes adrift for a tied 11th place.

Picking up a full winners' cheque for $400,000, Campbell is now on course to win his first European Order of Merit.

"My ultimate goal is definitely to win the order of merit, and this obviously helps," he said.

"We've got two big tournaments to come, the Volvo Masters and the World Championship at Valderrama, so I can do it.

"One thing I'm learning is to not get too much ahead of myself. I had to do that while waiting to discover whether we were going to play or not," he said.

"It was a long three hours and your mind starts racing, so I had to pull in the reins."

Montgomerie's goal of winning two of the three big-money season-ending events to snatch his eighth European number one honour looks even more unlikely.

"It's a big disappointment when you don't even get any chance on the final day," said Montgomerie, who had set himself a target of a 62 in the final round to come from behind and beat Campbell.

Dane Thomas Bjorn still has an outside chance of taking the Order of Merit title after finishing fifth, five strokes behind Campbell. He remains fourth on the money-winning list, and now leads Europe's Ryder Cup points table.
