Campbell
cruises to six shot win
New Zealander
Michael Campbell thundered to a six-stroke victory in the Heineken Classic ahead
of Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn for his second straight victory as lightning interrupted
the final round.
Campbell,
fresh from last week’s New Zealand Open win, blazed four birdies in the last
five holes despite a break for the weather on the 16th to post a 66
for a four-round total of 20 under par at the par-72 Vines Resort in Perth, Western
Australia.
"Under
the gun I just found an extra gear,” said Campbell.
Bjorn,
the champion of two years ago, had a faltering round of 70 to stay one shot clear
of third-placed Alastair Forsyth, who was playing in only his second tour event.
Scotland’s
Forsyth, 23, who won the tour Qualifying School late last year, scooped £45,
661 after carding a final round 67 to finish on 13 under, one shot ahead of World.
No. 5 Ernie Els.
“That’s
certainly the best golf I’ve played at this level,” said Forsyth.
Campbell’s second European
Tour win this season reinforced his position as Volvo Order of Merit leader with
the £121,767 first prize to add to his success in the Johnnie Walker Classic
in Taiwan in November.
“ Now I can concentrate
on trying to win the Volvo Order of Merit, which was my goal after winning the
Johnnie Walker Classic,” said Campbell.
Seven-time European champion
Colin Montgomerie will begin his season in February at the WGC-Andersen Consulting
world matchplay championship in California.
