Murphy joins lead after 65
Bob Murphy matched the course record with
a 7-under-par 65 today for a share of the second-round lead
in the Senior PGA Tour's Instinet Classic.
Murphy had an 11-under 133 on the TPC at Jasna Polana to match
Gil Morgan and defending champion Tom Jenkins. Morgan shot a 66,
and Jenkins had a 68.
Murphy bogeyed the first hole to drop to 3 under but, starting
at No. 4, birdied eight of the next 11 to reach 11 under.
``I'm putting as well as I can remember, as well as I ever have
in my career,'' said Murphy, seeking his first victory since 1997.
``I started horribly today but kept telling myself `You're doing
too many things right to get off track.'''
Jenkins, who set the course record Friday, entered the round
with a two-stroke lead at 7 under, but lost his advantage by
bogeying No. 16. It was just his second bogey of the tournament.
He birdied three of the first four holes on a slightly breezy
day, and had nine straight pars before making a birdie on No. 14.
``I thought I might pull a Tiger on them for a minute,'' said
Jenkins, referring to Tiger Woods' dominating performances. ``I
birdied 1, 2 and 4, and felt very comfortable. Midway through the
round, the putter kind of cooled off, I missed some makable putts
and kind of lost track, but then got back on track.''
Morgan, who entered the day in a three-way tie for second at 4
under, had seven birdies and just one bogey. He lost his chance for
the lead when he missed a 10-foot eagle putt on No. 18.
``I had four eagle putts, which doesn't happen very often, and I
didn't make any of them,'' Morgan said. ``But all in all, I'm in
pretty decent shape. I'll just try to go out Sunday and hit it
close to the hole.''
Jim Dent, who won the Super Seniors Competition by three strokes
over Jim Albus, was tied for fourth with Jerry McGee at 8 under.
Dent had a 68, and McGee shot a 69.
Arnold Palmer, playing in his 1,000th official PGA Tour-PGA
Seniors Tour event, shot a 76 for a 3-over 147 total.
After leaving birdie putts inches short on No. 6 and 7, Palmer
triple-bogeyed the par-3 8th and bogeyed the par-4 9th for a
front-nine 42. He rallied for a 34 on the back nine, marking the
second straight day the 70-year-old Palmer shot 2 under on the
final nine.
Bob Lendzion recorded the fourth hole-in-one in tournament
history when he used an 8-iron on the 152-yard, par-3 2nd.
Lendzion, 1 under after shooting a 74, also had a hole-in-one in
the Bruno's Memorial Classic on April 30.
