Sjoland holds off fellow Swedes
Patrik Sjoland won the Murphy's Irish Open at Ballybunion today after a battle
over the closing holes with fellow Swede Fredrik Jacobson.
Third and second in his previous two appearances, Jacobson appeared set to
continue the progression and grab his first European tour title when he led by
one with two to play.
However he never saw the fairway at the long 17th, took a bogey six and saw
Sjoland chip and putt for birdie.
Now one behind, Jacobson drove wildly again down the last, had to take a
penalty drop and had another bogey six. Sjoland's safely parred for a
two-stroke
victory.
The 29-year-old grabbed the £166,660 first prize with a closing 70 for a 14
under par aggregate of 270, only three outside the tournament record.
Defending champion Sergio Garcia had two sevens on his card, one a triple
bogey, the other a double, as he fell back from second overnight.
Dutchman Rolf Muntz, who was two in front with a round to play and still ahead
with eight holes to go, matched Garcia's seven on the par five 11th and also
double bogeyed the short 16th.
