Lawrie injury scare after freak accident

By Paul Trow - Golf Today News Editor

Open champion Paul Lawrie's hopes of retaining the title have received a setback due to a freak practice accident. The 31-year-old Scot was giving a lesson to a group of youngsters in the tented village when one of them caught Lawrie on the left wrist during his backswing.

Open organisers said that Lawrie visited the European Tour physiotherapy unit and was advised to rest the wrist and cancel this afternoon's practice round. Lawrie's manager Adrian Mitchell said the champion was in no danger of missing his title defence and would concentrate on his putting until tomorrow/

Following his Open win at Carnoustie last year and an impressive Ryder Cup debut in September, Lawrie has struggled to regain top form this year and has only recently recovered from a groin injury which forced him out of the US Open last month.

Paul Lawrie at St Andrews today, his injury shouldn't affect his play on Thursday. Allsport.
