Colin Montgomerie signed off with 2-under-par round of 70 at St Andrews
and said he'd lacked the confidence on the greens all week to be a
contender.
His total of 5-under-par left him among the has-beens for another year
at the Open Championship and said the three-putt at the second hole on
Thursday signaled the start of a desperately disappointing performance
with the putter.
``It's a frustrating game. I came here full of expectation and the
crowd were wonderful from the first hole but from the moment I
three-putted the second on the first day I had no confidence and that's
what the leaders have.
``You need confident and I haven't had that on the greens. It's
something I shall have to work on as I am not converting the opportunities
I am creating for myself.''
Montgomerie said he would now be focusing on the final major of the
year - August's PGA at Valhalla in Kentucky.
``I've on go left this season in the heat of Valhalla, I'll go away
lose some weight and work on my putting an see what happens there.''
