Ed Fryatt in as Steve Elkington withdraws
After undergoing hip surgery
last week, Australian Steve Elkington officially withdrew today
from this week's PGA Championship.
The 37-year-old Elkington, who captured the 1995 PGA
Championship at Riviera, was replaced in the 150-man field by England's Edward
Fryatt.
Elkington, currently ranked 41st in the world, underwent surgery last Friday to repair a torn labrum (hip ball and socket) and is not expected to return to competition for about five to six weeks. He will be rehabilitating in Houston.
In the past, his career has been hampered by sinus and other
allergy-related problems.
Elkington's injury was similar to the one suffered by Greg Norman
earlier this year and was operated on by the same physician, Dr. Marc Philippon. Norman
made a complete recovery and returned to action two weeks ago.
