David Duval withdraws with back injury
David Duval, who
is third in golf's world rankings, withdrew from the PGA
Championship on Tuesday due to a bad back that has bothered him
for weeks.
Duval, who played the British Open in obvious discomfort
and then was forced to withdraw from the International two
weeks ago because of his back, was replaced in the 150-man
field by Craig Stadler.
The 28-year-old Duval's back problem was diagnosed as a
"ligament issue," according to his withdrawal announcement. His
playing status was said to be "week to week."
Bobby Nichols, the winner of the 1964 PGA Championship and
a resident of Louisville, also withdrew from the championship,
citing a painful hip.
Nichols, who is 64, was replaced in the field by Greg
Kraft.
