Lee Westwood eyes Major for 2000

Lee Westwood has made winning a major tournament his biggest priority as he starts his 2000 campaign in the South African Open, which begins on Thursday in Johannesburg.

The 26-year-old Worksop wonder claimed three tournament victories last season and finishing second in the Order of Merit behind Colin Montgomerie.

But Westwood says that winning the Order of Merit is not top of his agenda: He said: "My goals will be in the Majors, the world championship events and the tournaments I'm going to play in America. If I win the Order of Merit it will be fantastic, a great achievement and obviously something I'd like to do, but it's not really high on my agenda.

"The more the game is progressing and becoming more of a world tour it means just as much to me, even more, to win a Major this year than winning the Order of Merit. It's about fourth in my priorities this year, moving up the world rankings (from sixth) is in the top three.

Westwood will be one of the favourites in Johannesburg alongside defending champion and local favourite David Frost. Germany's Bernhard Langer is also in the 156-strong field along with former Open champion Nick Price.
