Match level at 6-6 after
rain delay
Despite missing most of the morning
through rain the second day's play at Sunningdale provided more exciting golf,
and the match is still evenly poised as we go into the last day of the inaugural
Seve Ballesteros Trophy.
Play did not get underway until 1pm
which means the fourballs will now be played on Sunday morning before ht singles
after heavy rain left the greens waterlogged.
But it failed to damped the spirits
of the players especially Jose Maria Olazabal and playing partner Miguel Jimenez,
who dismantled Colin Montgomerie and Ian Woosnam in the opening fourballs to
help Europe take the lead for the first time in the tournament.
The Spaniardo raced to six up with
seven birdies in the first eight holes and eventually ran out 6&5 winners.
Olazabal said: "It was a wonderful
match and our start was very good. Five under after five made it very difficult
for Monty and Woosie. They didn't play that bad it was just that we played very
well and had a great day on the greens."
Montgomerie said: "Woosie and I didn't
have a prayer. The pair of them never looked like missing. If you ever need a
putting lesson then Olazabal's the man. It was fun to watch, I have to say that."
If the first match was a prosession
the other three were could not have been more opposite. Paul Lawrie and Garry
Orr were taken to the last hole by Jarmo Sandelin and Robert Karlsson before
posting a one hole win, that helped the hosts draw level at 5-5.
Darren Clarke resumed his regular partnership
with Lee Westwood and they were always on top of their match against Alex Cejka
and Jean Van de Velde. That match looked in the bag after they were four up at
one stageey were four up at one stage and despite a late rally from the European's
they came in 2&1 winners, Westwood making it three wins out of three.
The third match out saw John Bickerton
and Phillip Price against Thomas Bjorn and Sergio Garcia and it was the Europeans
with Garcia maintaining his 100 percent record - winning by a hole.
