Jeff Gallagher wins by one

Jeff Gallagher shot a three- under-par 69 on Sunday and held off three players by one shot to capture the Buy.com Tour South Carolina Classic. Gallagher finished with a four-day total of 10-under 278 for the second victory of his career on the circuit.

Gallagher, who also won the 1991 Cleveland Open, earned a first- prize of $72,000 and vaulted into second place on the Buy.com Tour money list.

"I like to make it very eventful," said Gallagher, who had the third-round lead at the Lakeland Classic earlier in the year and three-putted the 18th green to lose by one shot.

Chris Smith, Brett Quigley and third-round leader Lee Porter tied for second at nine-under. Porter began the day with a two-shot lead, but carded an even-par 72 on Sunday and bogeyed the last hole. Quigley shot a two-under 70 and Smith made the biggest jump with a six-under 66 -- the low round of the day.

Gallagher moved into a tie for the lead with a birdie on the 10th hole. Porter bogeyed the 12th to give Gallagher sole possession of the lead at 10-under and Gallagher added a birdie at the 15th for a two-shot edge.

However, a three-putt bogey at 16 left Gallagher just one ahead of Smith, Porter and Quigley with two to play.

Gallagher missed a 15-foot birdie putt on 17 and Porter made a two-footer to tie for the lead.

Porter then drove his tee shot into the rough on 18 and Gallagher, in the group ahead, was off the green after missing with his second shot. Gallagher was able to chip within inches and tapped in for par, leaving Porter with a chance.

Porter then missed the green with his approach shot and left his chip 15 feet from the pin. He missed the putt and wound up with a bogey to finish one shot back.

"I hit a perfect putt," said Porter. "I don't know how it didn't turn until it got past the hole."

Alan Bratton finished alone in fifth at eight-under, while John Elliott, who held a share of the lead midway through the final round, faltered and finished with a one-over 73 to tie for sixth at six- under.
