Wilson takes first day honours with 64

John Wilson fired an eight- under-par 64 on Thursday to grab the lead after the opening round of the Buy.com Tour Upstate Classic.

Tim Clark, Chris Smith and Vaughn Taylor share second place at seven-under, while Vance Veazey, Kevin Blanton, Brian Sharp and Randy Leen are next at minus-six.

Wilson is 53rd on the Buy.com Tour money list, having posted just one top-10 finish. He has made just nine cuts in 16 starts, but got off to a hot start on Thursday with birdies on four of his first five holes.

"I did everything well today," said Wilson, who is fourth in putting on the tour this year. "I made some putts, but I missed two four-footers and a three-footer for birdie, so we could have gone real low.

"Tomorrow is a new day and we will just try to keep going as best we can. We still have three more days like this."

A total of 73 players in the field of 144 played the Verdae Greens Golf Club course under par.

Lee Rinker, David McCampbell, Craig Kanada and Rob McKelvey are three shots back at five-under. Paul Gow, who won last week's event in Hershey, is among nine players knotted at minus-four.
