OTHER NOTES:
Woods is just the fifth wire-to-wire winner (leading after all four rounds with no ties) in U.S. Open history. The others were Walter Hagen in 1914, James Barnes in 1921, Ben Hogan in 1953, and Tony Jacklin in 1970.
Woods is the first player ever to win the U.S. Junior Amateur, U.S. Amateur, and the U.S.
Open.
He is just the fifth player to win three different USGA championships. Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus both won the U.S. Amateur, U.S. Open, and U.S. Senior Open. JoAnne Gunderson Carner won the U.S. Girls' Junior, the U.S. Women's Amateur, and the U.S. Women's Open. Carol Semple Thompson won the U.S. Women's Amateur, the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur, and the U.S. Senior Women's Amateur. Woods had already won the U.S. Junior Amateur and the U.S. Amateur -- three times apiece.
Woods moves into a tie for fourth place on the all-time USGA championship list. He now has seven USGA titles. Bobby Jones leads with nine (4 U.S. Opens and 5 U.S. Amateurs), while Nicklaus (4 U.S. Opens, 2 U.S. Amateurs, and 2 U.S. Senior Opens) and Carner (2 U.S. Women's Opens, 5 U.S. Women's Amateurs, and 1 U.S. Girls' Junior) are tied with eight each. Anne Quast Sander has seven.
Woods is the 11th player to win both the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open, joining Jerome Travers, Chick Evans, Francis Ouiment, Bobby Jones, Johnny Goodman, Lawson Little, Arnold Palmer, Gene Littler, Jack Nicklaus, and Jerry Pate.
Dating back to the final round of the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, Woods has played five consecutive U.S. Open rounds in par or better. The record is seven by
Woods is the first player in U.S. Open history to shoot the low round of the day three times in one tournament. He had the low first-round score with a 65, shared low second-round honors with a 69, and had the low final round with a 67.
He is only fifth player in U.S. Open history to have the low round (or tie for the low round) each of the first two rounds. The others were:
Charles ("Chick") Evans 1916 70-69
Jock Hutchinson 1923 70-72
Mike Souchak 1960 68-67
Hubert Green 1977 69-67
None of the four players listed above also had the low third round or the low final round. Evans and Green went on to win the Open, while Hutchinson and Souchack did not. Bobby Jones won the 1923 U.S. Open, and Arnold Palmer won in 1960.
Woods made a triple bogey on the par-4 third hole in Saturday's third round. The last time a U.S. Open winner made a triple bogey was in 1971, when Lee Trevino made a 7 on the par-4 sixth hole at Merion during the second round.
And what does Tiger Woods think about all these records?
"When you're playing in a tournament, you're just trying to win,'' Woods said. "The records are great, but you don't really pay attention to that.'
I've been told that I set a few records, but I don't really know what they are. "The only thing I know is I've got the trophy sitting right next to me."
