Lightning cuts short second round
Friday's second round of the Buy.com
Utah Classic was suspended for the day at 6:15 p.m. (et) because of
lightning. No player made it past the 12th hole and 77 players had yet
to tee off.
The second round will resume Saturday at 10 a.m. (et). The
players who were already on the course will pick up where they left
off when play was brought to a halt at 5:55 p.m. (et) Friday. Those
who did not have a chance to tee off in round two will begin to do so
Saturday at 11:30 a.m. (et).
The third round is tentatively scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. (et).
The players with the low 55 scores plus ties following the second
round will be paired in groups of three and will tee off on both the
first and 10th tees in order to expedite play.
Lightning forced the suspension of play five times on Friday for
a total of five hours and 56 minutes. The first delay began at 9:15
a.m. (et) and set back the starting times one hour and 25 minutes.
After play resumed at 5:30 p.m. (et) following the fourth delay, the
horn sounded for what would be the final time on Friday at 5:55 p.m.
(et). Twenty minutes later, tournament officials decided to restart on
Saturday morning when the forecast for the rest of Friday did not look
promising.
John Riegger currently holds a one-shot lead at nine-under par
through 10 holes. He birdied the first hole and eight pars later added
another on the 10th. Kevin Johnson, the winner of last week's Permian
Basin Open, stands at eight-under through nine holes. Tied with
Johnson at minus-eight are first-round leader Mark Hensby (through
eight holes), Jay Hobby (through six holes) and Andrew Morse (did not
Tjaart Van der Walt, who is tied with five others at seven-under,
collected two birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey on the back nine
-- his first side in round two -- then eagled the par-five first and
third just before play was called on Friday.
Weather plagued the first two rounds of last year's event, as
there were a total of six weather delays that led to two suspensions
for darkness.
