Roland leads after first round 68

Roger Rowland, who's best previous finish this year is a tie for 24th, carded a four-under 68 and has a one-shot lead after the first round of the BUY.COM Virginia Beach Open at the TPC of Virginia Beach.

Rowland, who tied for 38th last week in Richmond, had six birdies and two bogeys in his round of 68. Starting on the back nine, Rowland went out in 37, but played his last nine in five-under, including a stretch of three consecutive birdies. Rowland's career best result has been a pair of second-place finishes back in 1990 and '91.

David Berganio stands alone in second, following his three-under 69. Berganio has made the cut in six of eight events this year with just one top-10 finish.

Just two shots off the pace are five players -- Charlie Wi, Rob Bradley, Lewis Chitengwa, Garrett Willis and Jeff Gallagher. Gallagher, a winner earlier this year, ranks third on this year's money list.

Tripp Isenhour, the Tour's leading money winner this season, stands at one-over par while three-time runner-up in 2000, Chris Smith is tied for 18th at even-par.

Other notables include -- Bobby Wadkins and Larry Rinker at one- over, Guy Boros, John Elliott and Jim McGovern at two-over par, Keith Fergus at plus-four and Brian Claar, Donnie Hammond, Grant Waite and Lee Rinker finished five-over-par.

This is the first year of this tournament which features a first-place prize of $72,000.
