Denmark's Steen Tinning has pulled off a shock victory as he overtook tournament favourite Ian Woosnam in the final round of the inaugural Wales Open at Celtic Manor. Tinning finished two strokes ahead of the former world number one who went into the final round with a total of 203, 13 under par, and a one-stroke advantage over the Dane.
Tinning won his first ever European Tour title in impressive style as he fired a final round 69 for a 15-under total of 283 and finished on a one shot win over Swindon's David Howell to pocket the £125,000 first prize.
Crowd favourite Ian Woosnam, who was in contention for a hat-trick of wins on home
soil in three different decades, suffered a reversal of Tinning's fortunes as he struck three costly bogeys in five holes on the
back nine.
The former Masters champion could only card a final-round 73 to finish in a
tie for third alongside Swede Fredrik Jacobson who closed with a 67.
A play-off was in the offing at Wentwood Hills until Howell missed from
just three feet on the 17th for a bogey that left Tinning needing only a par
five on the last to clinch victory.
The 37-year-old duly delivered to end a 14-year barren streak on the European
Tour spanning 292 events.
