Spanish duo take first day lead
Defending champion Costantino Rocca continued to struggle as Luis Claverie and Jose Manuel Lara shared a new course record to lead the opening round of the North West of Ireland Open today.
The Spanish duo each recorded 6-under 66s at the Slieve Russell course in County Cavan to finish one stroke ahead of a group of six golfers, including Ireland's 47-year-old Des Smyth.
Rocca, a former Ryder Cup player, was well down the field after carding a 71. He has missed his last seven cuts and not won for 12 months.
The event is a joint European and Challenge Tour tournament.
