NOTES:
Last year, Scotland's Gary Orr holed a 12-foot eagle putt at the final
hole on Sunday to win this event by one shot over Phillip Price of Wales. Orr
and Price shared the third-round lead at 10-under after Price fired a course-
record 65 on Saturday. The Scotsman shot a final-round 69 and earned his first
victory on the European Tour. He went on to capture the British Masters in
August and finished 10th on the Order of Merit. Sam Torrance was the last
player to successfully defend his title (1982-83). Colin Montgomerie returns
to play on the European Tour at the tournament where he earned his first
victory on tour in 1989. This is the first time since 1990 that the event will
be contested at Quinta do Lago. That year, Mike McLean won by a single shot
over Gordon Brand, Jr. and Mike Harwood. The tournament record of 260 was set
by E.C. Brown in 1953. England's Roger Chapman will be on hand this week and
will become the sixth player in European Tour history to compete in 500
events. The next stop on the European Tour schedule is the French Open, where
Montgomerie is expected to be on hand to defend his title.
