Cabrera takes
two shot lead
Angel Cabrera fired a five-under
65 Friday to move out to a two-shot lead through two rounds of the
Argentina Open. The 31-year-old from Cordoba, Argentina stands atop
the leaderboard with a 36-hole total of eight-under-par 132.
Ricardo Gonzalez
matched first-round leader Angel Franco for low round of the tournament
with a 64 at the par-70 Jockey Club. The Argentinian is part of
a four-way tie for second at six-under 134 with England's Graeme
Storm, who turned in a 66, and the Swedish duo of Carl Pettersson
and Olle Karlsson, who each shot 69.
Argentina's
Jorge Berendt (65) and Spaniard Tomas Jesus Munoz (66) share sixth
place at five-under, while Franco is among seven players deadlocked
at minus-four.
Cabrera, who
at 42nd in the world is the highest ranked golfer in the field this
week, carded six birdies against a single bogey on Friday.
"I played a
very steady round today," Cabrera said. "I was always respecting
the course because you have to be careful around here. I played
18 holes one at a time and tried to keep my concentration."
Cabrera is
currently 52nd on the European Tour Order of Merit with a pair of
top-10 showings in 2001. He has recorded four runner-up finishes
in his career on the European Tour, and has posted victories in
the 1995 Paraguay Open and 1996 Masters of Latin America.
Cabrera teamed
up with friend and mentor Eduardo Romero to place second behind
Tiger Woods and David Duval in the 2000 WGC-World Cup at Buenos
Aires Golf Club.
Romero had
a second-round 66 to finish the day four shots off the pace with
Erol Simsek, Richard S. Johnson, Matthew Blackey, Jose Manuel Lara,
Stephen Scahill and Franco.
Franco had
a one-shot advantage after the opening round but struggled on Friday
with a two-over 72.
Amateur Matias
Anselmo of Argentina, who also shot a tournament- low 64 in round
two, vaulted into a tie for 15th at three-under 137.
