Cabrera takes two shot lead

Angel Cabrera fired a five-under 65 Friday to move out to a two-shot lead through two rounds of the Argentina Open. The 31-year-old from Cordoba, Argentina stands atop the leaderboard with a 36-hole total of eight-under-par 132.

Ricardo Gonzalez matched first-round leader Angel Franco for low round of the tournament with a 64 at the par-70 Jockey Club. The Argentinian is part of a four-way tie for second at six-under 134 with England's Graeme Storm, who turned in a 66, and the Swedish duo of Carl Pettersson and Olle Karlsson, who each shot 69.

Argentina's Jorge Berendt (65) and Spaniard Tomas Jesus Munoz (66) share sixth place at five-under, while Franco is among seven players deadlocked at minus-four.

Cabrera, who at 42nd in the world is the highest ranked golfer in the field this week, carded six birdies against a single bogey on Friday.

"I played a very steady round today," Cabrera said. "I was always respecting the course because you have to be careful around here. I played 18 holes one at a time and tried to keep my concentration."

Cabrera is currently 52nd on the European Tour Order of Merit with a pair of top-10 showings in 2001. He has recorded four runner-up finishes in his career on the European Tour, and has posted victories in the 1995 Paraguay Open and 1996 Masters of Latin America.

Cabrera teamed up with friend and mentor Eduardo Romero to place second behind Tiger Woods and David Duval in the 2000 WGC-World Cup at Buenos Aires Golf Club.

Romero had a second-round 66 to finish the day four shots off the pace with Erol Simsek, Richard S. Johnson, Matthew Blackey, Jose Manuel Lara, Stephen Scahill and Franco.

Franco had a one-shot advantage after the opening round but struggled on Friday with a two-over 72.

Amateur Matias Anselmo of Argentina, who also shot a tournament- low 64 in round two, vaulted into a tie for 15th at three-under 137.
