Opening day
washed out
Opening-round play in the
BellSouth Classic was rained out on Thursday. The players will return
to the TPC at Sugarloaf Friday morning to completely restart the
first round.
Thursday's
starting times will be used for Friday's first round, and the second
round is now scheduled for Saturday.
A total of
21 players were out on the course and only 12 made it as far as
the second hole when heavy rain rendered the course unplayable.
Jimmy Green, who birdied the first hole Thursday, was the only golfer
under par when play was called at 7:48 a.m. (et). The first players
teed off at 7 a.m. (et).
Green, scheduled
to restart at the first hole Friday at 7:18 a.m. (et), will have
to return to even par with the rest of the field. While Green will
look to duplicate his quick start, Doug Dunakey, who was already
four-over through two holes, gets to erase the poor beginning to
his first round.
Defending champion
Phil Mickelson is slated to tee off Friday at 7:45 a.m. (et).
Last year's
event was shortened to 54 holes when the final round was cancelled
due to rain and lightning. Mickelson defeated Gary Nicklaus with
a birdie on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.
