NOTES:
Hale Irwin birdied seven of the first 10 holes and held off a late
charge by Gil Morgan with pars on the final eight holes to capture last year's
title. It was Irwin's putter that paid dividends on Sunday and got him off to
his torrid start. He made a 15-footer on the first hole, a 30-footer on the
second and then an eight-footer on the third. Two holes later, he nailed a 20-
footer for another birdie and needed just 28 putts in his final round. Irwin
also hit 48 of 54 greens in regulation (89%). Thanks to his 2000 win and four
other top-10 finishes, Hale Irwin has won more money than any other player in
tournament history -- $509,192. Gil Morgan, a winner in 1997, is second with
$468,200 and four top-10 efforts. Isao Aoki is the only two-time winner of
this event, capturing the tournament in 1996 and 1998. Aoki has four top-10's
in six starts at this event and is third on the all-time money list with
$441,051 in earnings. Irwin has enjoyed a good deal of success at this
tournament. In six starts, he has five top-10 finishes (matching Dave Stockton
for most in tournament history), including his win in 2000. Irwin also shares
the record with Isao Aoki for the best 54-hole score in tournament history
(18-under-par 198), and his closing-round 65 last year was the lowest final
round by a tournament winner. He is 67 strokes under par in his 18 rounds at
this tournament with a scoring average of 68.28. Of those 18 rounds, 12 have
been in the 60s. He has had just one round over par -- a final-round 73 in
1999. Course designer Larry Nelson finished second in 1998, 15th in 1999 and
tied for 5th last year. This tournament has been decided by two shots or less
in each of the seven previous events, however there has never been a playoff.
Springhouse has hosted this event since its inception in 1994. In the previous
seven events, the player who has led or had sole possession of the lead after
36 holes has won the event six of seven times. The lone exception was in 1994,
when Dave Stockton could not hold off Lee Trevino and finished T2. Last year,
Irwin was among four tied for the lead at 11-under-par 133, before closing
with a 7-under-par 65 for a one-stroke win over Morgan. Hole No. 4 was the
toughest hole at the 2000 BellSouth Senior Classic at Opryland with an average
score of 4.221 or .221 over par. Hole No. 11 ranked as the second hardest at
4.199 (+.199). Four of the holes at the Springhouse Golf Club were among the
25 easiest on the SENIOR PGA TOUR in 2000. Hole #6 was the 15th easiest, #12
was the 18th easiest and #10 was the 20th easiest. In addition, hole #1 ranked
as the 24th easiest. The Springhouse GC ranked 37th among 38 courses on the
SENIOR TOUR, with an average score of 70.641 or 1.359 under par. Only Serrano
Country Club, site of the Gold Rush Classic, was easier with an average score
of 70.177. The purse was increased by $100,000 from last year. Trevino has won
four tournaments in the state of Tennessee. In addition to his victory in 1994
at this event, Trevino captured the 1971-72 and 80 Danny Thomas Memphis
Classics. Gary Player opened with an eight-under 64 last year, making him the
youngest player in Senior Tour history to shoot his age. Miller Barber also
shot his age when he carded a first round of 68, beating his age by one, the
first time he accomplished the feat as a Senior. Next week the Senior Tour
moves back to New Jersey for the NFL Golf Classic at Upper Montclair Country
Club where Trevino will defend his title.
