NOTES:
Annika Sorenstam took the lead with a birdie on the 17th hole and held
on to edge Rosie Jones by one shot for the title at last year's Big Appleassic.
Classic. Sorenstam carded a one-over-par 72 on Sunday, but finished with a
three-day total of seven-under 206 in the rain-shortened event. Jones also
carded a 72 in the final round to finish alone in second, while second round
leader Allison Finney stumbled home with a 75 to finish third. Finney ended
Friday's second round with a one-shot lead over Sorenstam, then had a day to
think about her tenuous lead because rain washed out play on Saturday and
forced officials to shorten the tournament to 54 holes. Sorenstam joined Betsy
King as the only multiple winners of this event. King accomplished the feat
the first two years of the events existence while Sorenstam won this event for
the first time in 1998. Sorenstam will attempt to tie her personal best of six
wins in a single season (1997). In her six appearances at this event, Sorenstam
has won twice and finished second onece. There have been only two playoffs in
the events history (1994 and 1999). Wykagyl Country Club has hosted this event
since its inception in 1990. The purse was increased by $50,000 from last year
and has increased every year except one (1992). Only two past winners of this
event are not competing this week, Tracy Kerdyk and Caroline Pierce. Next week
the LPGA Tour moves to Ohio for the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic where Dorothy
Delasin will defend her title.
