Second round 61 gives Durant a three shot lead

An 11 under par 61 gave Joe Durant a three-shot lead at 18-under for a lead of 3 shots after 36 holes of the five-round Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.

His score of 126 broke the 36-hole tournament record of 128, set by Scott Hoch and Hal Sutton in 1994.

Durant's second-round 61 matched the course record at Indian Wells, set by Bert Yancey in 1974 and equaled by David Edwards in 1987 and Brent Geiberger in last year's event.

"I was on fire all day," said Durant, who won the 1998 Western Open for his only victory on the PGA Tour. "That's just about as good as I can play."

Chris Smith is alone in second place at 15-under. He shot an eight-under 64 on Thursday at the Bermuda Dunes course.

Bob Tway, and Europe's Miguel Angel Jimenez together with current Phoenix Open champion Mark Calcavecchia share third at 14 under par. Tway and Jimenez each posted 62s on Thursday, while Calcavecchia shot a 66.

The Bob Hope Chrysler Classic is the only PGA Tour event that is played on four courses: the PGA West Course (Arnold Palmer Private Course), Indian Wells Country Club, Bermuda Dunes Country Club and LaQuinta Country Club.

The format for the event is pro-am play for the first 72 holes. Each golfer will play with the same threesome of amateurs on each of the four courses until Sunday when the professionals play the final 18 holes on their own at the Arnold Palmer Private Course.
