Two share first day lead

Joel Kribel eagled the final hole Thursday to complete a seven-under-par 65 and grab a share of the first-round lead with Jeff Sanday at the Canadian PGA Championship. Patrick Burke, Jay Hobby, Kevin Burton, Richard Johnson, Shane Bertsch, Rob McKelvey and Stiles Mitchell are each one shot off the pace at minus-six.

Kribel holed out from a bunker at the par-five closing hole for an eagle and a six-under 30 on the back nine at DiamondBack Golf Club. He mixed three birdies with two bogeys on the front side to go one-under on his way out.

Kribel, a Stanford graduate who lost to Matt Kuchar in the finals of the 1997 U.S. Amateur Championship, came into this tournament, the first Buy.com Tour event to be played in Canada, riding a high. The 24-year-old shot 68-67 to tie for first at the sectional qualifier in Rockville, Maryland on Monday, thus earning a spot in next week's U.S. Open at Southern Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

"Hopefully, this is something that I can build on and keep some momentum going with it," said Kribel, one of 18 Buy.com Tour players to qualify for the U.S. Open.

Sanday teed off on the back nine first and was even par until the 18th, where he made the first of four straight birdies. After barely missing a birdie at the fourth, the 30-year-old from South Pasadena, California almost made an eagle at the par-five fifth but settled for another birdie to get to five- under.

Sanday birdied the seventh and eighth for his own nine-hole score of 30.

"Every hole on my back nine, except for nine, I had a birdie or eagle opportunity," Sanday said. "I came around the turn and hit No. 18 and just kind of caught fire. I don't know how to explain it."

Chad Campbell, first on the Buy.com Tour's season money list, shot five-under 67 for a share of 10th place with Tim Petrovic, Rod Pampling and Canadian Richard Zokol.
