Berendt claims maiden
tour title
Argentina's Jorge Berendt
won his first European tour title, shooting a 4-under-par 68 Sunday to capture
the Cannes Open by one stroke.
Berendt finished at 20-under
268, with Jean Van de Velde of France a shot behind after a 65 at the Cannes Mougins
course.
``This is fantastic,'' said
Berendt, who earned $83,400. ``I can't put into words what this means to me. ...
I was nervous over the last few holes but I was proud of the way I handled myself.''
Van de Velde ran off four
straight birdies, and for the second straight day bogeyed the 4-par 12th hole
and eagled the 5-par 16th.
He moved up from 138th to
106th place in the Order of Merit. The top 115 players are guaranteed a European
Tour card next season.
France's Thomas Levet (68),
Spain's Santiago Luna (68) and England's Andrew Marshall (70) shared third at
272.
