NOTES:
Notah Begay III sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to capture
last year's event by one-shot over Mark Calcavecchia. Begay, who entered
Sunday's final round three strokes behind third-round leader Calcavecchia,
fired a seven-under 64 for a four-day total of 20-under-par 260 and his
second win in as many weeks on the PGA Tour. Begay's total of 260 was the
lowest 72-hole score for this event since the Greater Hartford Open moved
to the TPC at River Highlands in 1991. Calcavecchia, who closed with a Sunday
68, finished third in 1999 and tied for second in 1990. No player has ever
won this event two straight years. Billy Casper, Arnold Palmer and Paul
Azinger are the only players to win this event more than once (Casper four
times, Palmer and Azinger two apiece). This is the 11th straight year the
event will be held at the TPC at River Highlands. Wethersfield Country Club
hosted this event for the first 32 years, followed by the TPC of Connecticut
over the next seven. There have been 16 playoffs in the tournament's history,
the last coming in 1998 when Olin Browne defeated Stewart Cink and Larry Mize.
The purse was increased by $300,000 from last year. The PGA Tour moves to
Illinois next week for the Advil Western Open at Cog Hill Golf & Country Club
where Robert Allenby will defend his title.
