NOTES:
One shot off the pace heading into last year's final round, Mark Hensby
carded a five-under 66 to force a playoff with Manny Zerman. On the seventh
extra hole, Hensby tapped in for par after Zerman missed from five-feet to win
for the second time on the BUY.COM Tour. Hensby and Zerman's four-round total
of 266 tied the tournament recvord set by Michael Christie in 1995 and
equalled in 1998 by Brian Bateman. The win helped to propel Hensby to the PGA
Tour where he has competed in 11 events, making the cut four times. Hensby
ranks 128th on the money list with one top-10 finish. Mike Heinen registered
the seventh ace in tournament history last year when he knocked a 4-iron in
the cup on the 201-yard sixth hole at Raleigh Country Club. Andy Morse made it
eight when he holed out on the 152-yard 17th hole. Five of the eight holes-in-
one occured at Prestonwood Country Club while the other three were recorded at
Raleigh C.C. The purse was increased by $50,000 from last year. Prestonwood
Country Club hosted this tournament the first four years of its existence.
Raleigh Country Club, which hosted this event the past three years, was the
first Donald Ross-designed course to host a BUY.COM Tour event and was the
last design by the fabled architect. Seventeen of the 415 players who have
made the cut at this event have fired four rounds in the 60's during the
event, Surprisingly, only four of the seven winners are included in that group
- Hensby, Vance Veazey, Brian Bateman and Michael Christie. This is the sixth
of 30 official events on this year's schedule. Next week the BUY.COM Tour
heads to Virginia for the Virginia Beach Open where Ryuji Imada will defend
his title.
