NOTES:
Sophie Gustafson made a two-foot birdie putt on the final hole to claim
her first LPGA title with a victory at last year's event. Gustafson held a
two-shot advantage heading into the final round, but could only muster an
ever-par 72 to edge Kelly Robbins and Amy Fruhwirth by one shot. Robbins fired
a five-under 67 to finish second at this event for the second time. Gustafson,
who led wire-to-wire, bogeyed the 15th and 16th holes to fall into a tie with
Robbins and Fruhwirth. On the final hole, Gustafson hit her second shot on the
par-five into a greenside bunker and was able to blast out to within two feet,
setting up the heroics. Runner-up in 1998 and '99, Lore Kane closed with a 67
and tied for fourth. The purse was increased for the fourth straight year.
This year's purse was raised by $300,000. Eagle's Landing has hosted this
event since its inception in 1992. LPGA Hall-of-Famer Nancy Lopez is the
tournament host. Lopez, who won this event in 1997, finished tied for 62nd
last year. The LPGA Tour remains in the south next week in Franklin, Tennessee
for the Electrolux USA Championship hosted by Vince Gill and Amy Grant. Pat
Hurst is expected to be on hand to defend her title.
