NOTES:
Not only did Annika Sorenstam capture last year's event, but with
the win (her 19th) she qualified for the LPGA Hall-of-Fame. However,
due to the 10-year rule, Sorenstam cannot be officially inducted until
2003. Trailing Sorenstam most of Sunday's final round, Pat Hurst made
a charge with five birdies on the final six holes and with Sorenstam
three-putting the final hole, the two players finished regulation tied
at 269, a new tournament record. On the first playoff hole, both
competitors birdied, however on the second extra hole, Sorenstam two-
putted for birdie while Hurst missed her chip from 15-feet for birdie.
The win by Sorenstam was one of five during the 2000 season and it
came on her "home" course, as she was a former University of Arizona
golfer. Defending champion Juli Inkster made a late charge, briefly
taking the lead with a birdie on 16. Inkster finished with a final
round of 64 to end alone in third. Sorenstam, Hurst, A.J. Eathorne and
Brandie Burton were the only players in the field to post all four
rounds in the 60's. First and second-round leader Cristie Kerr carded
rounds of 72-70 over the weekend to finish 12th. Randolph North has
hosted this event since its inception in 1981. The purse was increased
by $50,000 from last year. There has been only two playoffs in the
tournament's 20-year history (1982, 2000). This event begins a five-
event west coast swing, which ends the third week in April at the City
of Hope LPGA Classic. Next week the LPGA Tour moves north to Phoenix
for the Standard Register PING where Annika's sister, Charlotta
Sorenstam defends her title.
