NOTES:
Betsy King sank a 10-foot putt for birdie on the second hole of a
sudden-death playoff to beat defending champion Kelli Kuehne and Vicki
Goetze-Ackerman and capture last year's event. The victory was King's
second of the 2000 season and 33rd of her Hall-of-Fame career. The win
enabled King to join Rosie Jones as the only two-time winners of this
event. King, who also won this event in 1991, ran her all-time playoff
record to 8-6. Kuehne had all but wrapped up her second-career win and
first successful title defense when she double-bogeyed the 72nd hole to
fall back into a three-way tie at 12-under-par 276 with King and Goetze-
Ackerman. Kuehne had a chance to win the event in regulation, but her 12-
foot par putt missed the mark. Jones is the only player to win this event
in back-to-back years, accomplishing the feat in 1996-97. Jones has fared
well at this event the last five years, winning twice, finishing second,
10th, and 32nd last year. The purse was increased by $100,000 from last
year and has increased seven straight years. This four-day event begins on
Thursday. Corning Country Club has hosted this event since its inception in
1979. This is the final tune-up for next week's second major of the season,
the U.S. Open at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in North Carolina. Karrie
Webb, the defending U.S Open champion, and Annika Sorenstam, winner of this
year's Nabisco Championship, as well as the winner of the U.S. Open when it
was last held at Pine Needles in 1996, will be on hand.
