NOTES:
Ian Leggatt came from three strokes off the pace on the final day,
posting a 2-under-par 70 to tie leader Chris Smith and force a playoff.
Leggatt then birdied the first extra hole, the par-5 18th, to collect his
first BUY.COM TOUR win. Leggatt's winning check of $72,000 propelled him
past the $200,000 mark in just the 12th event of the season, making him the
fastest player to reach that mark in TOUR history. Previously, only five
players had topped $200,000 for a single season. Smith had a three-stroke
advantage after a 69 in Saturday's third round. Jaxon Brigman and Leggatt
were tied for second at 10-under 206. Smith, who was attempting to become
the first wire-to-wire winner on TOUR since Kelly Gibson captured the 1999
Oregon Classic, bogeyed the 16th and 17th holes on Sunday and needed a
birdie on the 72nd hole to tie Leggatt at 12-under 276. The win enabled
Leggatt to become the fourth Canadian-born player to win in TOUR history,
joining Jerry Anderson, Glen Hnatiuk and Rick Todd. Leggatt will not be on
hand to defend his title as he finished fifth on the 2000 BUY.COM Tour money
list and advance to the PGA Tour. In 2001, Leggatt has played in 12 events,
making the cut twice and ranks 202nd on the money list. Smith recorded a rare
double-eagle during the second round of last year's event. Smith used a
driver-wedge combination for his deuce at the 512-yard, par-5 opening hole.
It was one of only two double-eagles recorded on the BUY.COM TOUR in 2000.
There has not been a hole-in-one in the two years the tournament has been
contested at The Golf Club at Yankee Trace. The 462-yard, par-4 17th hole
proved to be the most difficult hole for last year's event. The hole played to
a stroke average of 4.631 for the week, which also made it the toughest hole
on the 2000 BUY.COM TOUR. The hole yielded only 16 birdies over the course of
four rounds, along with 198 pars, 150 bogeys, 47 double-bogeys and 12
"others," which included one 10. Going back over the first 11 years of the
TOUR, last year's 4.631 stroke average is the seventh highest on the all-time
list of most difficult holes in a single year. The 16th and 17th holes at
Yankee Trace ranked as the toughest back-to-back holes on the BUY.COM TOUR
last year. The 225-yard, par-3 16th played to a stroke average of 3.383, which
ranked it No. 14 on the list of toughest holes. The par-4 17th hole was No. 1
on the list at 4.631. No other golf course can boast of a more difficult
pairing in 2000. For the record, the 464-yard, par-4 eighth hole was actually
the second toughest hole on the Yankee Trace course. Its stroke average of
4.482 ranked it T4 on the 2000 list. John Wilson and Marco Dawson are the
only players in the event's history to post all four rounds in the 60's when
they accomplished the feat in 1999. In 1998, Doug Dunakey shot the second 59
in BUY.COM history at the Miami Valley Open, the predecessor of this week's
event. The Golf Club at Yankee Trace is the only public golf course on the
BUY.COM Tour. Next week, the BUY.COM Tour moves to Tennessee for the
Knoxville Open at Fox Den Country Club. Current PGA Tour player, J.J. Henry captured
last year's event.
