McGinley takes lead with
back to back eagles
Paul McGinley had consecutive
eagles in a round of 64 on the Old Course to take a two-stroke lead Friday in
the Dunhill Links Championship.
McGinley started his second
round at the 10th hole of the fabled layout, and was three strokes under on the
back nine. Then, he eagled the fourth and fifth holes on the front nine.
``They turned a 68 into
a 64,'' McGinley said.
His 8-under score for the
round left him at 131, 13 under after 36 holes.
First McGinley struck an
8-iron 146 yards at the 464-yard fourth. He did not know the ball went into the
cup until he walked almost to the green and was told what had happened.
At the 581-yard, par-5 fifth,
he struck a drive 350 yards downwind, hit a 5-iron to the green and made his putt
from 25 feet.
The Irishman was two shots
in front of Tony Johnstone and Brian Davis, one of three players tied for the
lead after the first round. Johnstone had a 66 and Davis a 68 on the Old Course,
proving to be the easiest of the three being used for the $5 million pro-am event.
Padraig Harrington was tied
for fourth after a second straight 67. Also at 134 after playing on the Old Course
was Jamie Donaldson, who carded a 66.
Ernie Els and Omar Sandys,
who also shared the lead after the first round, slipped back. Els managed a 2-under
70 at Kingsbarns -- thanks mainly to an eagle -- and fell four shots off the pace.
Sandy was at 136 after a 1-under 71 at Carnoustie.
McGinley had to finish three
first-round holes at Kingsbarns in the morning, carding a 67 before shifting to
the Old Course for his second round. The 64 was his best ever on the Old Course,
where he played in seven Alfred Dunhill Cup team events.
``The Dunhill Cup experience
is very helpful, especially in this poor weather,'' he said.
U.S. Open champion Retief
Goosen, who can clinch the European Tour Order of Merit title by winning this
week, shot a second straight 69 and is tied for 21st. His total is one shot better
than that of Darren Clark, who is second on the Merit list. Clarke had a second-round
67. Both played at Carnoustie.
