NOTES:
Pat Hurst celebrated her first Mother's Day in impressive fashion as she
captured last year's event wire-to-wire. Hurst with her husband and 11-month
old son looking on, carded a final round of 70 for a four-shot win over Juli
Inkster. Hurst opened with a course-record 65 and held a six-stroke advantage
at the halfway point. Hurst saw her lead cut to two after a third-round 72 but
she increased her advantage on Sunday with three birdies and a bogey on the
front nine. However, a bogey on 12 reduced her lead to two over Inkster, who
at the start of the day trailed by five. Inkster could get not closer as she
stumbled home with back-to-back bogeys on 16 and 17 while Hurst birdied the
final two holes for her third career win. Karrie Webb, who has dropped in the
world rankings behind Annika Sorenstam, was paired with Hurst on the final
day, but could do no better than 74 and tied for sixth. Inkster and Michelle
McGann were the only players in the field to post all four rounds under par.
The tournament is hosted by country singers Vince Gill and Amy Grant. Only
four of the top-10 money winners are competing this week. Next week the LPGA
Tour moves to Ohio for The Champions Classic, where Annika Sorenstam will
defend her title.
