NOTES:
Six shots off the pace heading into Sunday's final round, defending
champion Darren Clarke carded a blistering seven-under 65 to pass third-round
leader Michael Campbell and win this event by one shot. Campbell, who opened
with a nine-under 63 in lift-clean and place conditions, led by five after
round two, but struggled home over the weekend with back-to-back 72's to tie
for second with Mark James. Campbell had a chance to force a playoff with a
birdie on the final hole, but his putt lipped out. Clarke has finished 1st,
1st, 49th, 12th and 4th the last five years and was the last player in the
events history to register four rounds in the 60's (1999). Lee Westwood, who
tied for fourth last year, also recorded four rounds in the 60's in 1998.
Clarke joined Mark James as the only players to win this event two straight
years. Forest of Arden is hosting this event for the second straight year and
fifth time overall after a three-year stint at Hanbury Manor Hotel. The Belfry
hosted this event for nine years while Royal Birkdale played host in 1988.
Colin Montgomerie, eighth at this event last year, has finished 1st, 2nd, 2nd,
12th, 4th, 5th and 8th the last seven years of the tournament. This event will
serve as the final tune-up for next week's U.S. Open at Southern Hills in
Tulsa, Oklahoma where world number-one Tiger Woods will defend his title.
