NOTES:
For the first time since 1986, the Senior Tour has an official match-play
tournament, but this event features a unique new format. This is a four-day
competition, with 78 players competing in stroke play the first two rounds.
The top-16 players will advance to match play on the weekend and will be
seeded based on their 36-hole scores. There will be morning and afternoon
matches on Saturday and Sunday. Last year, Larry Nelson led from start to
finish to win this event for the second time in its five-year history. Nelson,
the only man in the field to post all three rounds in the 60's, opened with
back-to-back 66's before Sunday's 68 for a three-shot win over Tom Watson.
Nelson, who also won this event in 1998, tied for 16th in 1997 and 11th in
1999. Nelson's first ever Senior Tour appearance came at this event in 1997.
1997 and '99 champion Hale Irwin has a very impressive record at this event,
with two wins, a second, 9th and 13th. Irwin is the all-time money winner at
this event with $572,350 in earnings while Nelson is second ($467,673). Both
players had impressive records in match play, as Irwin was 13-5-2 in Ryder Cup
play while Nelson was 9-3-1. Kermit Zarley recorded a rare second-round
double-eagle with a five-iron from 189 yards out in 1996. Zarley also
has made one of two holes-in-one in the events history when he aced the third
with a five iron in 1999. Jim Thorpe made an ace during the first round last
year on the third hole with a 6-iron. The purse has been increased by $500,000
from last year and is the fifth largest on the Senior Tour. Boone Valley Golf
Club has hosted this event since its inception in 1996. The par-4 fourth hole
was the most difficult last year, playing to a scoring average of 4.253 and
was the 50th toughest hole on the entire Senior Tour in 2000. For the third
straight year, the par-5 17th was the easiest with an average score of 4.481.
Next week, the Senior Tour remains in Missouri for the TD Waterhouse
Championship at Tiffany Greens Golf Club. Dana Quigley is expected to be on
