NOTES:
One shot behind third-round leader Karrie Webb when the final round
began, Annika Sorenstam fired a four-under 68 to force a playoff with Webb
and then eagled the first playoff hole to defeat Webb and become the third
straight Swede to win this event. Webb, who led after each of the first three
days, shot a final round of 69. Both players birdied the final hole to meet
in a playoff. On the first extra hole, both players hit good drives down the
18th hole. Webb's second landed in the greenside bunker while Sorenstam's
sailed towards the flag, just six feet away for her winning eagle. Sorenstam
joined Helen Alfredsson (1994, 98 winner) and Catrin Nilsmark (1999 winner)
as previous consecutive winners of this tournament. The purse for this event
was increased by $300,000 from last year to $2,100,000, the second largest
on the LPGA Tour behind the U.S. Women's Open ($2,900,000). This event is co-
sanctioned by the LPGA Tour and the Ladies European Tour (The Evian Tour).
This event features a field of 78 players with no cut being made. The
tournament starts on Wednesday and concludes Saturday. Although this is the
eighth Evian Masters, the tournament is in its second year on the LPGA
circuit. Laura Davies, who tied for 24th last year, is a two-time winner of
this event and has finished second once. Next week the LPGA Tour moves back
to the United States for the third major, the McDonald's LPGA Championship
in Delaware. Juli Inkster, the two-time defending champion will be on hand at
DuPont Country Club. Sorenstam captured the first major, the Nabisco
Championship while Webb was the winner two weeks ago at the U.S. Women's
Open.
