NOTES:
One shot behind Kermit Zarley heading into the final round, Larry Nelson
carded a six-under 66 to post a four-shot win over Jim Thorpe. Nelson,who used
a putting tip prior to the final round, broke away from the field with four
late birdies to surpass the $5 million mark in Senior earnings. Nelson's four-
stroke winning margin was the largest at the event since 1987 when Chi Chi
Rodriguez defeated Orville Moody by eight strokes. Zarley stumbled home with a
final round of 75 and tied for 11th. Nelson is attempting to join Hale Irwin,
Don January, Rodriguez and Bob Charles as the only players to have won this
event in consecutive years. Nelson is expected to be on hand this week,
despite withdrawing two weeks ago at the NFL Golf Classic. Irwin, who tied for
six last year has fared well at this event. In 18 rounds, Irwin has never been
over par with a scoring average of 68.50 and is the leading money-winner in
tournament history, averaging $90,100 per appearance. His six appearances
have been two firsts, two seconds, a sixth and a ninth. For the third consecutive
year the purse has been increased, this time by $100,000 from last year. The
FleetBoston Classic is the oldest official 54-hole tournament on the SeniorTour
event and the 18th consecutive year in which Nashawtuc Country Club has
hosted the event. Nashawtuc is an American Indian term meaning "between two rivers,"
because the course runs halfway between the Sudbury and Concord Rivers.
During the first three years of this event, the tournament was held at Marlboro
Country Club. For the first time in his Senior Tour career, Arnold Palmer
bettered his age at this event when he shot a second round 69. The King
eventually tied for 64th. There have only been three holes-in-one in
tournament history. Bob Charles recorded the first ace in 1988 on the eighth
hole. Two years later, Agim Bardha aced the 17th hole and in 1993 Bob Murphy
also posted a one at the 17th. In the 20 previous FleetBoston Classics, a
player who has been in the lead or tied for the lead heading into the final
round has won 12 times. However, no 36-hole leader in the last two years has
gone on to win the event. This year's event was moved from its August date of
last year, the earliest the event has been held since 1990. For the second
year in a row, the par-3 13th hole proved to be the most difficult with a
scoring average of 3.226. Three players have made this event their first
Senior Tour victory: Bob Goalby (1981), Bob Betley (1993) and Tom McGinnis
(1999). Although never a winner at this event, George Archer has fared well
with six top-10 finishes and a scoring average of 69.74 in eight appearances.
Next week the Senior Tour moves to Peabody, Massachusetts for the
U.S. Senior Open at Salem Country Club where Irwin will defend his title.
