NOTES:
Paul Gow captured his second career victory by edging out Paul Claxton by
one stroke last year. Gow was tied for 21st after the first round, five
strokes behind leader Tim Loustalot. A 68 on Friday moved him to two-under 140
and into a three-way tie with Claxton and John Riegger. Gow kept a share of
the lead with a 70 during the third round to join Claxton and Pat Bates at
three-under 210. A final-round 71 gave him the one-stroke margin over Claxton.
12 golfers were within two shots of the lead with nine holes to play, but
Gow birdied the 15th and parred the final three holes to secure the win. The
victory enabled Gow to finish in the top-15 on the 2000 money list and earn a
promotion to the PGA Tour. So far in 2001, Gow has made seven of 15 cuts
without a top-10 finish and ranks 146th on the money list. No player has
successfully defended a title and only two have won the same tournament twice
in the 11-year history of the BUY.COM Tour. Chris Smith captured the Dakota
Dunes Open in 1995 and 1997 and Ryan Howison won the Lakeland Classic 1997
and 1999. The Country Club of Hershey, which previously hosted an LPGA event on
the West Course from 1978-94 (Lady Keystone Open), has been the site of this
event since its inception in 1997. The Country Club of Hershey East Course,
ranked the toughest on the 1999 BUY.COM Tour, was displaced on the 2000 list
by Meadow Springs Country Club in Richland, Washington, the home of the Tri-
Cities Open. Hershey's East Course was considered the second-most difficult
layout last season. It's level of difficulty increased from 3.150 strokes over
par in 1999 to 3.234 in 2000. Meadow Springs played to a scoring average
of 75.417 or 3.417 above par, due in large part to second-round winds which
gusted up to 50 mph during the afternoon. There has only been one hole-in-one
posted in the first four years of the Hershey Open, with Barry Conser
recording an ace on the eighth hole during the third round of the inaugural
1997 event. 1998 champion Michael Clark is the only player to go wire-to-wire
in winning the Hershey Open, and no player has fired all four rounds in the
60s in the history of the event. In fact, only four players have
managed to put together three rounds in the 60s, including Edward Fryatt in
1999 and Michael Clark, Mike Sposa and Paul Gow in 1998. Three of the four
Hershey winners have either led or were tied for the lead heading into the
final round, with only 1997 champ Barry Cheesman mounting a come-from-behind
victory. Cheesman closed with a 66 to come from three strokes back on the
final day of the first-year tournament. The purse was increased by $25,000
from last year. The BUY.COM Tour moves to Kansas next week for the Wichita
Open where Ben Crane will defend his title.
