Hobby takes lead into
final round
Jay Hobby fired a record-tying,
seven-under 64 on Saturday to grab a one-shot lead at 10-under 203 after 54 holes
of the Buy.com Hershey Open.
John Rollins, who held a
piece of the lead after the previous two rounds, shot a two-under 69 and took
sole possession of second place. Brad Klapprott also fired a course-record-tying
64 and is alone in third at minus-six.
Rollins was in control throughout
the third round but faltered down the stretch. He three-putted the 15th green
for bogey and then made a mess of the par-three 16th.
Rollins hit a four-iron
from the tee and splashed his shot into water. He then took his drop and chipped
off the green before finally converting a two-footer for double-bogey.
"It's just one of those
things where you are not going to hit every shot perfect and unfortunately, I
missed my shot at the wrong time," said Rollins, who has yet to record a
top-10 finish this season. "I played great all day with the exception of
two holes."
Hobby was the beneficiary
of Rollins' late mistakes. His 25-foot birdie on the 17th put him into the lead.
After he wedged his approach to four feet at the last, he had a chance to break
Bob Burns' course record, but his putt slipped by the hole and he was left with
a one-shot lead.
"It was pin-high left,
and I just didn't have enough gumption to hit an aggressive, firm putt,"
said Hobby, who is winless on the Buy.com Tour. "I played about a foot of
break."
Hobby birdied three of his
first four holes on Saturday, including a 40- footer at the fourth. He parred
the next hole but drained a six-foot birdie putt at the sixth for a front-nine
32.
He made a pair of birdie
putts inside of five feet at 13 and 14 before his run at the record.
"I really didn't think
about [the record]," said Hobby, who finished seventh here last year. "I
was just trying to shoot one shot better. I knew in the back of mind that it was
somewhere close, but I never thought about it.
"To say I was disappointed
is an understatement. When you stiff it on the last one, you really want to make
it to cap off a good round, but it's the only putt I missed all day, at all. I
really can't complain about it."
Rollins birdied two holes
on his front side and then birdied three of his first five on his second side.
After a five-foot birdie at 14, the problems came and he fell into second.
Klapprott birdied six holes
on the front nine and then mixed two birdies and a bogey on the back for his share
of Hershey Open history.
Steve Haskins (67), Kelly
Grunewald (67), David Gossett (69) and second-round co-leader Rob Bradley (73)
share fourth at five-under par.
