Parnevik
moves three clear
Jesper
Parnevik posted a five-under 67 on Friday to grab a three-shot lead
at 12-under 132 after 36 holes of the Honda Classic. John Huston,
Mark Calcavecchia and Chris Smith share second at nine-under-par
135.
Parnevik, who
shared the lead after round one with Ben Ferguson and Geoff Ogilvy,
opened on the second nine at the TPC at Heron Bay on Friday. The
Swede ran home five pars before scoring his first bogey of the tournament
at the 15th, when he missed a six-foot par save.
The colorful
Swede did not waste time in reclaiming those lost strokes. At 16,
Parnevik rolled home a 10-foot birdie and then holed another birdie
putt of that length at 17 to go out at one-under 35.
The second
nine included two "bonus birdies" according to Parnevik. At the
190-yard par-three fifth, Parnevik used a nine-iron due to windy
conditions and missed the cup by some 60 feet but then nailed the
bomb putt for birdie.
At the seventh,
Parnevik drove into a fairway trap off the tee and then nailed a
seven-iron over the green on to the fringe. He holed the fast chip-shot
from behind the hole to get to 12-under.
"It was a slow
start," said Parnevik, who is making a hour-long commute from his
home this week. "I missed a few birdie putts early that I thought
I should have made."
"Of course
it was a lot harder today," said Parnevik, referring to the windier
conditions. "I'm more pleased with my round today, shooting 67,
than I was with my 65 yesterday, and I actually played a lot better
today."
Huston had
the early lead in the clubhouse after a round of 67. He dropped
a shot at the second but rebounded with six birdies along the way,
including the final two holes.
"I think that
it played a lot tougher today, because the wind is in the opposite
direction, and I think it is a tougher wind for this course," said
Huston, who won this event in 1990. "It blew a little bit harder
today than it did yesterday."
Calcavecchia
had gotten to 10-under but three-putted from 40 feet at the 17th
and then missed a 10-foot birdie try left on his last to shoot 68
for the day.
Smith birdied
three holes on the turn for his 68 and piece of second place.
Joel Edwards,
Brad Faxon, Spike McRoy and John Daly, who posted a 65 on Friday,
share fifth at minus-eight.
Thirteen golfers
are tied for ninth at seven-under including Hal Sutton, Carlos Franco
and Ogilvy.
High-school
sophomore Ty Tryon, who was two shots off the lead before he finished
five-over on his last five holes, made the 36-hole cut by two at
four-under. He narrowly missed becoming the youngest player ever
to make the cut in a PGA Tour event but that honor remains with
Bob Panasik, who accomplished the feat at the Canadian Open in 1957.
"First of all,
I'm incredibly happy right now and just - if I didn't finish so
bad, I would probably be crazy right now, but I just finished really
bad," Tyron said after his round.
Ferguson struggled
on Friday and is tied with Tryon at four-under after a second-round
75.
