NOTES:
Gil Morgan birdied 10 of the 12 par-5s he played during tournament
week last year to post a four-shot win over Bruce Fleisher and Bob Murphy.
Morgan's three-day total of 199 set a new tournament record, breaking the
previous mark of 202 set by Chi Chi Rodriguez in 1987. Tied for the lead with
defending champion Tom Jenkins and Murphy, Morgan carded his second
straight 66 as he took the lead on the fifth hole Sunday and held on the
rest of the way. In 16 years, only Lee Trevino (1994), Jim Ferree (1991) and
Morgan (2000) have won by more than one stroke. Morgan, Fleisher and Jim
Colbert joined Gary Player and Dale Douglass as the only men in tournament
history to shoot three rounds in the 60's. Player and Douglass accomplished
the feat in the same year (1990). The purse was increased by $100,000 from
last year. The total purse for the first Instinet Classic (formerly the Bell
Atlantic Classic) in 1985 was $200,000. This is the second straight year in
which the TPC at Jasna Polana is hosting the event. Chester Valley Golf Club
had been the site of this tournament in 12 of the 16 previous years. In 1991
the event was held at White Manor Country Club and for two years the event was
staged at Hartefeld National. There have been four wire-to-wire winners at this
tournament - Don January in 1985, Gary Player in '86, Jim Ferree in '91 and
Bob Eastwood in '97. There have been only eight players in Senior Tour history
to win 20 or more events on the Senior Tour, six of which have won this event
- Lee Trevino, Don January, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Bob Charles, Bruce Crampton and
Jim Colbert. Miller Barber and Hale Irwin are the other players to win 20
events. Douglass and Trevino are the only two-time winners of this event. No
player has ever won this tournament two consecutive years. There have been
only three holes-in-one at this tournament - Ken Still in 1989, Jim Colbert in
'95 and Bob Pfister in '96. Playoffs have decided three of the last five
Instinet Classics. Only 12 of the top-20 money winners are competing this week.
The Senior Tour moves to Massachusetts next week for the FleetBoston Classic
in Concord, the final tune-up for the U.S. Senior Open, where Larry Nelson will
defend his title.
