Pernice holds
on for narrow victory
Tom Pernice,
Jr. managed only one point in Sunday's final round but it was enough
to secure a one-point victory and the second PGA Tour title of his
career at The International.
Pernice finished
with a four-day total of 34 points under the modified Stableford
scoring system, which awards two points for birdie, five points
for eagle and zero points for par. A point is deducted for bogey
and three are taken away for double-bogey or worse.
Pernice, 41,
captured his first career title at the 1999 Buick Open.
Chris Riley
collected four points Sunday to finish with 33 and sole possession
of second place. He earned his first top-10 of the season and his
best showing since joining the PGA Tour in 1999.
The 27-year-old
from Las Vegas recorded a pair of fourth-place finishes last year.
Vijay Singh,
seeking his second win at The International and his first victory
since the 2000 Masters, was in contention until he bogeyed the par-five
17th. He had 32 points to tie for third, his eighth top-five finish
of 2001.
Also with 32
points were defending champion Ernie Els and Chris DiMarco, who
had a six-point lead after eight holes but came apart over his next
eight.
Brett Quigley
carded five birdies and an eagle against two bogeys for a final-
round-best 13 points. He vaulted into a tie for sixth place at 30
points with 1992 International champion Brad Faxon, who closed with
eight points.
