NOTES:
Tied with Bruce Fleisher heading into the final round, Larry Nelson
carded an eight-under 64 to cruise to a five-shot win over Fleisher and Hale
Irwin last year for the first of his six year-2000 wins. His first-place check
of $210,000 was the largest ever as a professional. Irwin shot a final round
of 65 to tie for second with Fleisher, who closed with a 69. Nelson's three-
round total of 197 set a new tournament record, breaking the previous mark of
200 set by Chi Chi Rodriguez in 1991. Nelson was the first player since Chi
Chi to post three rounds in the 60s. Rodriguez accomplished the feat in 1991.
Irwin has posted two wins, a second and a sixth at this event the last four
years. Irwin, Jim Colbert and Rodriguez are the only back-to-back, two-time
winners of this event. Bob Charles has finished in the top-five at this
tourney eight times and has finished second and third three times each in 14
events. Desert Inn hosted this event from 1986 through 1993, followed by TPC
at Summerlin from 1994 through 1996. After two years as a 72-hole event, the
tournament was shortened to a 54-hole event in 2000 and will only be played on
the TPC at Summerlin course. In 1997 through 1999 the event was played over
two courses, TPC at Summerlin and TPC at The Canyons. There have been only
two playoffs in the 15-year history of the event (1989 and 1996). The Senior Tour
moves to Birmingham, Alabama next week for the Bruno's Memorial Classic
where John Jacobs will defend his title.
