Nystrom & Owen share first day lead

England's Greg Owen and Sweden's Henrik Nystrom fired 7-under-par 65s to share a one-stroke lead Thursday after the opening round of the German Masters.

John Daly, the first big-name American to play in Europe since the terrorist attacks, struggled to a 71 in the $4 million event. Daly, after some convincing by organizers, flew in Monday on a private jet. He said he still isn't comfortable with commercial aviation.

Tournament director Erwin Langer agreed to extra security measures while asking Daily to attend, but hasn't said what they entail.

Owen, putting together one of the hottest streaks of his career, birdied eight of 10 holes before dropping a stroke on the 17th.

``It was fantastic,'' said the 29-year-old player seeking his first career title. ``I just kept knocking them down and hitting birdies.''

Nystrom had six birdies and an eagle as players battered the Gut Laerchenhof course for low scores.

A stroke back were Ricardo Gonazalez of Argentina and John Senden of Australia. U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen of South Africa carded a 68.

Daly, who had two bogeys, wasn't the only top player to struggle.

Michael Campbell, the defending champion from New Zealand, had a 72, and was two shots behind Colin Montgomerie.
