Goosen off to flier with 62

Retief Goosen matched the course record he originally set in 1997 with a round of 62 Thursday at the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond. The U.S. Open winner has a three shot lead over Jarrod Moseley and Elliot Boult.

Due to heavy overnight rain, the start of the tournament was delayed for four hours. The opening round could not be completed on Thursday with 45 players yet to finish. Play will resume Friday morning.

Goosen followed birdies on the first two holes with an eagle on the par-five third to take an early lead at four-under.

After five more birdies, Goosen was nine-under after 12 needing just three more birdies to break the European Tour record of 60. He would go on to bogey the 13th.

"Yes, the figure came into my mind after the 12th and with the 13th coming up and a good drive, I could probably have reached the green in two. The bogey really stopped it," said the South African.

"This is a great course, a great design. Today I was able to see the shots," Goosen added. "I was a bit nervous at the start but then I was looking at the flag on every hole."

Moseley, who has missed three consecutive cuts, shot a six-under 65 after coming in as a replacement for defending champion Ernie Els, who withdrew due to a back injury.

"I've got Ernie's locker so hopefully I can go on and play like him this week", said Moseley, who collected four birdies, an eagle and no bogeys.

Boult was also bogey-free for his round Thursday.

England's Gary Evans and Germany's Alex Cejka both carded four-under 67s to finish five strokes behind Goosen.

1999 winner Colin Montgomerie shot a one-under 70 while Sergio Garcia, who fired a 62 at Loch Lomond in 1999 to share the course record with Goosen, turned in a first-round 72.
